Division: Pteridophyta
Class: Pteridopsida
Order: Athyriales
Family: Athyriceae
Genus: Athyrium
Native in Asia to Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan the pictum fern is a bright green fern with a red brown stem. Its fronds or leaves are about 25-40cm tall and about 15-25cm wide. They are mostly an ornamental plant that will live all winter long earning its other name the Christmas fern. Since it is a vascular plant and serves as a carpeting for the ground it does well in shaded areas and serves well as erosion control in gardens. They live in dry or moist wooded banks and ravines. They are a spore bearing plant, with spores on the underside for protection and serve as a place for insect to lay their larvae.
