Domain: Archaea
Phylum: Euryarchaeota
Class: Thermococci
Order: Thermococcales
Family: Thermococcaceae
Genus: Thermococcus
Species: T. litoralis
Living in the deep sea hydrothermal vents, thermococcus litoralis is an anerobic organotroph hypothermophile 0.5-3.0um in diameter. Growing in temperatures around 75 degrees C, this species is the only of its kind that is not motile. The cell walls only consist of one S- layer with no hexagonal lattices. Unlike others it only needs sulfur to stimulate growth, but doesn't need it to live. Thermococcus litoralis live in extremely high temperatures. Optimal growth temperatures are about 87 degrees C, and at a pH of 4.0- 8.0.
