Archaea have unique characteristics that differ them from other kingdoms. They have plasmid membranes made a lipid compositions and unique RNA polymerase and ribosomes. Archaea live in extreme environments such as those of the bacteria.
Methanogens: Produce large amounts of methane gas
These are commonly used in sewage treatment plants because of the high methane gas and the little oxygen as they are poisoned by oxygen.
Halophiles: "salt loving"
Found in the Dead Sea and The Great Salt Lake, these are mostly heterotrophs but can use photosynthesis because of there unique pigments.
Thermophiles: "heat loving"
Found in hot springs and volcano vents, these use H2S to generate ATP.
