The Black Morel was found in Europe by a Swedish mycologist, Elias Magnus Fries in 1822. Fruiting from March to June the black morel is less common than other morel species. It is an edible fungus found in woods and forests of Britain. It is 3-8cm in diameter and 6-8cm tall. The cap is conical and deeply pitted. Asci of the black morel are about 300x20um with only 8 spores per asci. The spores are ellipsoidal and about 18x11um. Each spore contains an oil droplet at each end along with a pale cream spore print.
